My Review on Matchstick Men Essay

Matchstick men means a kind of person who can have others buy his things, even just a box of matchsticks, with his excellent deception and eloquence. Therefore, they are also called cheaters or con artists. In the film Matchstick Men, the main character Roy was such kind of an outstanding con artist who always cheated others. With his partner Frank, he made a lot of bucks. Whereas, he suffered from odd disease which gave him many pain. Things get to a turning point when a daughter called Angela came into his life. Roy gave deep love to her and gradually overcame his illness. As a result, he wanted to give up cheating others and be a responsible father. Nevertheless, after an accident, Angela killed someone that was cheated by them and Roy decided to sacrifice himself to protect his daughter. In the end, however, Roy found that all of this turned out to be a fraud which was directed by Frank. Ironically, he lost all his money that was also earned by cheating. What a joke! An excellent con artist though he was, Roy was cheated by his partner. And it really makes me realize the importance of communicating with others. Imagine the situation that when Roy heard he had a 14-year-old daughter, if he could phone his ex-wife and talk about it, perhaps the fraud could be debunked. However, Roy was afraid of talking with his ex-wife and failed to face the past, as a result, that gave cheaters a good opportunity to continue their plan. Besides, the movie also shows me the power of love. Before the appearance of Angela, Roy had serious illness and heavily relied on pills. It was the love to his daughter that cured him. He no longer ate pills and could eat pizza with his daughter on the carpet without caring about the clearness. In fact, he enjoyed time staying with her and had the happiest time in his life. So at the end of the movie, when Roy met the false ‘daughter’, though he was angry, he didn’t choose to revenge but to forgive her. Love made a difference on him and changed his life. Another point I want to express is that misfortune may turn out to be an actual fortune. On the one hand, Roy was cheated and lost all of his money. From this aspect, he was absolutely unfortunate. However, during that period, he earned happiness and lightened his illness. After that he gave up cheating others and began a totally new life as a salesman. Money is important but compared with love, health and happiness, money is nothing. Though life deprived Roy of his money, he got love, happiness and health instead. Hence, when life is tough for us, we should see it from different aspects. Although we may lose something, we can also gain other things more important instead.

English as a Global Language Essay

In recent decades, the entire world has bared witness to the rise of English as the world’s primary language. Apart from being the primary forms of communication for ordinary people, English has also poses as a means of communication in other domains such as mass communications, economics, engineering, business, aviation, political affairs, and entertainment. The question has thus become apparent, how did English become the world’s lingua franca? Originally, English was only spoken as a vernacular language of people within the British Isles, but since the expansion of the British Empire from the middle ages to the middle of 18th century, the English colonizers have taken their local dialect to the territories they conquer (Schitz, 2004). With the exception of Egypt and Sudan, figure 1 shows that most of the nations under the British Empire’s control manifest the influence of the English language to the local populace. Figure 1 (Schitz, 2004) Today, the English language is considered the primary language of most countries such as the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Asia, Africa (Schitz, 2004). Putting the number of speakers aside, the placement of English in the pedestal of global language can also be attributed to the stature of the global superpower. From the very reason of the spread of English to the world’s consciousness, power plays a vital role in recognition of language. David Crystal explains that language itself is dependent, in a sense that language only exists in the human senses of those who speak it, when such people of a particular language succeed, their language comes with them (1997, 7). As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the United States being a superpower nation is the major factor why English is a global language. And being the emblem for world dominance for the last five decades reflects that power has played a vital role in the emergence of the United States’ brand of English as a global language (Bruthiaux, 2003, 9). Gillaume Schitz (2004) relates the strength of America as a superpower to the constant migrations in the country in recent decades. Figure 2 (Schitz, 2004) Based on Schitz’s analysis, the diction and/or accent of American English varies dependent of the regions within the American geography, but regardless of the diversity of the American English norms, generally, American English is a world standard because of its stature among the world’s nations. In a similar magnitude, the American English language contributes to success in various fields such as culture, business and economy while complementing the fact that the success of the United States in other facets of human endeavour also establishes English as a global language. For instance, the multinational fast-food chain McDonalds primarily invaded the food industries of non-English speaking nations through the introduction of their food products to the markets of most countries in the world. English as a global language provides an extensive communication system in the advent of globalization through overseas employment, tourism, international security and information dissemination (Crystal, 1997, 100). Overseas employment requires a universal language since there are applicants and employers who do not understand the native language of one another. Similar principles can be applied in the art of music, a song cannot grasp international success and recognition if the lyrics cannot be understood (Crystal, 1997, 104). Braj B. Kachru (1995) has come up with the three circle model to represent English as a global language by categorizing the use of English as primary, secondary, and tertiary language. The drastic change in the world’s collective culture is another considerable factor on why English is the global language. Much of this is brought about by the fact that most influences on the world’s cultural trends come from Americans. The technology of personal computers for instance, contributes to the proliferation of English in the context of a global language because the American life has transformed the personal computer from a sophisticated technological device to a standard business tool and home appliance. And as David Groddol indicates, English is used in most computer and internet applications simply because most of these applications are made by Americans (Graddol, 1997, 4). In addition to the trend that most transactions today are processed in computers and that the internet can be used as a means of education and resource for information (Graddol, 1997, 4). Technology in terms of communication is another vital factor that manifests the reason why English is the language of globalization (Crystal, 1997, 86), since English can serve as the universal medium to share cultures. English can also serve as the universal informant of international affairs and other international issues. English should be the world language simply because it has become popular over the centuries. The rise and fall of the British empire, the drastic changes in culture, economy, bussiness, technology and communication contribute to putting the english language in the pedestal of universality. The given points in the essay answers the question should english be become the world’s language, and justifies the answers to the said questions as well. In this sense, english can be the only medium that can unite a diverse world. References Bruthiaux, P. Tonkin, H. , and Reagan, T. G. (Eds). (2003). Reflection on Least Restrictive for whom Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Reflection on Least Restrictive for whom - Essay Example It is where he was most comfortable and able to enjoy life, just like other human beings do. 2. Yes, I agree that deafness must be the most difficult condition to live with because without hearing it is hard to speak, too. Without sound life would be very bland and lonely, not to mention very scary. Without being able to communicate it would be frightening for even the strongest of people. 3. Mary may have had better communication in explaining the fact that Brian was not doing so well in the school. He was sad and lonely because he could not communicate properly. The parents knew that she cared very much for Brian, but nothing really could have helped let them know how crucial to his improvement it was to be around other hearing impaired people. Only they can truly understand each other. The parents had to come to terms with that for themselves and they did. 4. If they had the means to they should have had a trained speech pathologist work with Brian regularly in a class of other hearing impaired students so that he did not feel that he was all alone in a sea of hearing human beings. Not being the only one perhaps would have allowed him a better chance at integrating himself. If he could have seen more people like himself it wouldn’t have been as fearful. 5. I think the placement of Brian came at the correct time. Such a young child was better off in the care of his parents until it was time for him to begin learning about the rest of the world. The parents could only do so much since they were not trained in sign language at the time. At the age he was placed it was crucial for him to develop into a normal child with friends and communication everyday - a remarkable amount of communication that he could understand and encompass, so that it would lead to a more fulfilling life for him. Brian’s story is a touching one. It is sad that any human being has to experience the sadness of being hearing impaired. However, with lots of

Influence of IT on our lives Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Influence of IT on our lives - Essay Example Sheltering information has been at the center of all industries and concerted efforts have been made in order to conserve the critical data that gives an edge in today's globally influenced economies. IT has seriously influenced our lives and its impact is being felt on medicine, business, engineering and now even on the activities of governments. It is being increasingly utilized to ease the way in which work is undertaken and at the same time to simplify the activities of information manipulation and preservation. In this fast paced world demands are increasing with expanding populations and shrinking time frame has placed huge constraints on governments, which finds itself strangled in the dominance of technology. The need of the hour therefore is to expand the role of IT in the public sector and to make use of the precise technologies at the right time. Debates have been held throughout the past decade to analyze the role of IT implementation in the UK governance. In the meantime continuous research has been conducted by UK administration and a number of developments have been made that marked the expansion of IT in the UK's Public sector. Huge budgets have been streamlined towards this issue and the first step for IT enhancement was the development of an online portal that was aimed at providing information to the UK nationals through other web links. Unfortunately the idea was not successful with the English population but it registered the foundation for public sector IT development in the country and it was followed up by the launch of an entirely functional website in 2004.These websites have aimed at automating tasks such as billing and tax paying, and have helped UK citizens in saving the most valued resource of time. A number of accusations have been made regarding the insufficient utilization of resources and UK government has been charged for blindly depending on the wave of Information Technology instead of focusing on the needs of the people. In a report published by the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) UK, the government was advised to ensure that IT innovation was lead by the needs of the publi c rather than by blind faith in technology. A number of recommendations were also made and the government was primarily asked to concentrate on issues like service quality, user satisfaction and time saving. A Manifesto for a Digital Britain has been adopted that are structured around policies of modernizing, recognizing and delineating in order to modernize Britain's public institutions and economy. Various developments have hence been made that are focused on providing the right things to the public these include the vehicle licensing website, the chip and spin technology and the congestion charge to enable automation of the public sector. Chip and PIN Chip and PIN is the name that has been taken for the new EMV Card Payments System designed to supplement and ultimately substitute magnetic stripe payment cards in Europe. It was designed by Europay, Mastercard and Visa, and the specifications for this new technology are managed by EMVCo, a company specially created for that purpose. Chip and PIN has been regarded as the biggest change that has occurred to the payment methods and it is being claimed to be the simplest

The Impact of Technology on Education Research Paper

The Impact of Technology on Education - Research Paper Example In the present world, technology has an influence on almost every field of life. However, there are some fields where the impact of technology is more apparent than others. As Thadani states,â€Å"the latest developments in technology can be seen and felt in many industries, but there are some areas that have been benefited more than others† Some of those fields include long distance communication, nursing and healthcare, product design and manufacturing, ecommerce, and education. In this paper, we will discuss the impact of technology on education. The aim is to know how different technologies are making educational system more interactive and beneficial for teachers and learners. Education and technology are directly related to each other. Education feeds technology, which in turn, serves education (Fodje). Technology has become an essential part of all educational systems (Pratt). The reason is that the use of technology in classrooms has opened up a way towards an interactive l earning environment for students where they have an easy access to knowledge. In the present world, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education has become extremely important because of the wide range of benefits associated with it. In the field of education, ICT supports both teachers and learners in exchanging information and knowledge in such a way that communication distances between students and teachers become shorter and access to knowledge becomes easy.... Having discussed the need for using technology in educational sector, let us now discuss some of the ways technology is making the processes of teaching and learning easier for teachers and students respectively. Smart Boards Smart boards help teachers in presenting lectures to large audiences using big white screens. This technology not only benefits teachers in communicating knowledge to students but also helps students in learning the knowledge. Students usually take more interest in studies when their teachers make use of technology for knowledge transfer. As Dekunder states, â€Å"SMART Boards, which are made by SMART Technologies of Canada, are interactive whiteboards that are mounted to a wall, like a chalkboard, and connected to a computer and projector† (1). Here, an important point to mention is that smart board is a newer a technology than ordinary projectors. Using ordinary projectors, teachers cannot make any changes to the display being shown on the screen, where as smart boards have a touch sensitive screen using which one can touch the text and can make changes wherever needed. Smart boards play a major role in creating an interactive learning environment. Another advantage of using smart boards is that teachers do not need to sit behind the computer system all the time while delivering lectures; rather they can move in front of the white screen of smart board to edit the data or to move to the next page or slide. The impact of every technology is positive for education considering the ease they provide to both teachers and students. Smart board is one of those technologies the demand of which is increasing in the educational sector with every passing day because of their reliable and high

Generalized Framework For Mining Web Content Outliers Research Paper

Generalized Framework For Mining Web Content Outliers - Research Paper Example With the advent of social networking web sites, micro blogging as well as an increase in usage of the net over mobile phones added an avalanche of data over the web, which varied in context and attracted all sorts of interest groups. This constant increase in information has created a great need of fast, relevant and mature content search methods that can sift through information, understand and generate search results in the shortest possible time. This requirement resulted in the development of revolutionary search engines like Bing, Google, etc. These search engines not only perform rapid searches over provided query from the user, however, they also maintain huge repositories of data classified into specific categories. There are several challenges that exist within such classification processes, and which can cause imprecise search results if they are not dealt with properly. Several methods have been proposed to match the most relevant web content with the user's query, however , this is a matter of debate that whether search engines should only generate the directly matched results or also provide some relevant results? Both methods have their own significance and a mixed kind of approach is in practice by different search engines. Google's page rank method got great popularity and has been modified by others for different purposes, for example the importance or relevance of a page is not measured for the top query results generation however several other kinds of processes are associated with this page ranking method. For instance, the computational advertisement industry has grown to a $20 billion industry this year and is expected to go further and big search engine groups are leaders in this industry so far. Advertisements are supposed to be placed on relevant pages so that they are viewed by the relevant i.e. targeted customers, which not only increases the revenue for their customers in terms of return of interest, however, moves towards personalize d or behavioral targeting. Out of several

Optional Technologies Adopted in the Construction of Building Elements Essay

Optional Technologies Adopted in the Construction of Building Elements - Essay Example Design professionals significant role in the quality of the built environment cannot be denied. Buildings in the contemporary world are a complex undertaking that require many different skills and materials. In this regard, the capabilities of the engineers and architects on the integrated design team are critical for the overall success of the design. In order to carry out the design and propose various alternatives, some background data is often required. This is usually with reference to the location of the proposed project and its various jurisdictions. The design process is then guided onwards by the knowledge of such project information. It is based on this that the relevant safety factors can be applied in the design so that the proposed methods and constructional technologies are safe and appropriate (EMMITT, BARRY & GORSE, 2010, p. 14). With the layout plan given for a proposed four-storey commercial building, with its components and the boundary conditions, different optional building technologies can be used to come up with the most appropriate designs. The building elements considered are as follows: Basements in commercial buildings are in most cases constructed to serve as foundations for the superstructure of the building, and in others to increase its utility to provide space that can be used by occupants of the building (FLEMING, 2005, p. 33). When adequately and properly constructed, they can be used for the following purposes: The intended use of the basement must be determined first before any design decisions are made. This will also have an impact on the quality of the basement. The level of performance of the basement areas is to be determined from the onset of construction to help in cost estimations and the material choice for the basement and its surrounding features.

The Importance of Learning and Achievement in Life Regardless Essay

The Importance of Learning and Achievement in Life Regardless - Essay Example In the school year 2004-2005, the researcher had the privilege of working with the most wonderful Middle School Resource Room children. The experience of teaching in a rural farming community was an eye-opening experience and one that I will never forget. The following research has been based on the idea that children of poverty often do not achieve their highest potential in school. One way or another, it seems that grades are not important to them. In my opinion, grades are not important to the said students because they feel as though they do not have many opportunities such as getting a good paying job, acquiring lots of money and so on. Resource Room students often see themselves as inadequate in the area of knowledge, skills and brains. Hence, it is the duty of the teacher or teachers to help these students see what they have to offer the world, the job market and other sectors of success in the society. Although this is the case, it could not be denied that the main will of th ese students is to free themselves from poverty. How? Through short term schooling, earning minimum grades and planning to obtain a minimum wage paying job in the future. In this regard, understanding poverty and middle school resource room student achievement will allow teachers to begin to understand the students’ thinking, their rationale for school, their view concerning the importance of school, their patterns of displaying several behavioural reactions towards numerous situations concerning themselves and their education.

The cycle of a relationship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The cycle of a relationship - Essay Example A closer look at these stages will help us to analyze them in a better way. The relationship starts with a formal conversation and this stage is referred to as initiation where the exchange of information is limited. (McGraw, 2001). As days pass by, the relationship moves on to the next stage where the topic of conversation is about likes and dislikes. They tend to ask more questions to know more about each other in order to move forward in their relationship. Not all relationships move on to the next stage, some of them part their ways if their interests are not similar. This phase is known as the experimentation phase. Once they cross this stage, the relationship intensifies and the girl and the boy tend to share more information about their personal life. The relationship evolves into a more intimate one and physical attributes might also crop in. Each step in this part of a relationship brings them closer leading to a state where they accept each other. This phase is called as the phase of integration and the couple tends to exhibit common interests and likes. The relationship gets converted into a bond where the girl and the boy get themselves engaged. In certain relationships, the more matured form is also attained. A relationship becomes stronger when they agree to accept each other as they are and it seems to be easy to take it up to the next level. But, not all the relationships end on a positive note. People tend to move away and this occurs in different stages. Getting separated or moving apart can happen at any stage of the relationship. When analyzing a bonded relationship, the possibility of getting into an argument or a fight is less, whereas, a couple with less understanding is more prone to such unnecessary fights and problems. Initially the differences might take a front seat and every other talk leads to a fight.

Anna Huffs Article Resistance Research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Anna Huffs Article Resistance Research - Essay Example Every paragraph is coherent and unified to the other. The student did an excellent job. The grammar errors were minimal in this paper. The only mistake I came across was punctuation issues, which can be corrected through proofreading. Keegan Farrell’s essay, Draft Zahra’s Paradise and Human Rights Abuses, discusses the current situation in Iran of how the regime is oppression its citizens. The article also discusses how the Iranians are opposing this rule, as well as how they are using human rights commissions to fight this rule. Punctuation was also the main grammar mistake in this paper. The student is not conversant with classifying positives in between their sentences. These can be rectified by proofreading the paper severely. Maria mentions people such as Eve Ensler who have endured the act of mistreatment as a way of giving textual evidence. Maria studies Eve deeply, which makes a reader understand what is going in Eve’s life. The grammar issues that I found in this paper include punctuation and incorrect use of prepositions. Such mistakes could be rectified also by proofreading the paper before handing it into the  instructor. Mike Strickland essay, Zahra’s Paradise and the Nonviolent Resistance Movement in Iran, talks about the oppression and resistance of Iranians being persuaded by their regime. Every paragraph of Strickland’s essay discusses the issue mentioned above. He explores the significance of oppression and resistance through explaining the effects of the resistance. As a way of giving textual evidence, the writer gives specific parties, which concern the oppression and resistance in Iran. The logic behind this organization is that the government considers itself superior to others, and what it does is final.

Possible risks Essay Example for Free

Possible risks Essay Determination of pregnancy is not certain until the second trimester, at around twenty weeks, when the fetal heart beat can be heard via a fetoscope. Albeit there are presumptive and probable signs associated with pregnancy, like the early morning sickness or the growing size of the abdominal area, these could also be caused by a different pathology. Hence, it can be inevitable for a woman who is not aware of her pregnant state to be exposed to radiation, most especially if she is not aware of her current menstruation cycle. Radiation exposure usually occurs whenever a person is exposed to cosmic rays, external radiation from radioactive ores, internal exposure through radiation therapy given for treatment in cancer patients, and most commonly through diagnostic x-rays. More often than not, pregnant women who are not aware of their pregnant state could have gotten their diagnostic x-rays taken, which is equivalent to receiving 70 millirem. Also, she could have been exposed to other radiation sources, like watching the television and living next door to a power plant. But exposure to radiation can have an acceptable limit of 350 millirems for the pregnant woman. For the pregnant woman, the most critical period wherein the fetus will suffer the most health consequences is when the she is exposed to radiation around two weeks to fifteen weeks gestational age. At two weeks gestational age, if the mother is exposed to a radiation that measures greater than 5 rad or 5000 millirem, a miscarriage can take place or even death inside the womb. If the fetus is exposed to radiation at the gestational age of eight to fifteen weeks, the fetus is to suffer a severe brain damage from the exposure. This can result in lowered intelligent quotients or IQs, mental retardation, stunted growth and other birth defects. Mental retardation is defined as a general developmental disorder characterized by a lower than average intelligence marker and the child is to suffer from limited daily living skills due to limited learning capabilities. Stunted growth in a child will be evidenced by a sluggish growth and development progress, as evidenced by a lower than normal height, weight and even cognitive skills. After this critical period, the two to fifteen weeks of gestational age, the fetus will unlikely suffer from radiation exposure, unless the exposure is extremely large. Only having been exposed to at least five thousand x-rays at one time can give harm to a 16 week old fetus. At 26 weeks gestational age, the fetus cannot be harmed by radiation exposure, and if ever exposed to radiation, the fetus will unlikely suffer serious health consequences. This can be compared to a newborn being exposed to radiation; the chances of having defects are greatly decreased if not invisible already. However, some of the effects of being exposed to radiation cannot readily be seen or manifest in the early life. Studies also show that fetuses are extremely sensitive to the cancer causing effects of radiation exposure; hence this can increase their risks in acquiring cancer later in life. Radiation exposure can be limited, if not avoided. The pregnant woman needs to be aware of her physiological state. She would have to consult all of her diagnostic exams and her workplace to her physician, so that radiation exposure can be prevented early on the pregnancy.

Reflection Upon Role Play Experience for Communication

Reflection Upon Role Play Experience for Communication Reflecting upon role play activity experience is an essential ability for all experts to grow better administration and communication skills, disagreement decision and improve future execution. To think back on the play that was directed as group work a week ago has permitted taking an interest understudies to pick up administration and negotiation skill. This paper will reflect upon the part that I personally played in this pretend action, and in addition fundamentally investigate our execution as a group work. It could be contended that our group performed well in general; yet more negotiation, communication and management abilities could have been moved forward. This paper will remark upon the group work, business communication style, procedures and propose likely upgrades in future exercises. Our team comprised five members and were all delegated with a particular role within the simulation. Reflecting upon my role as key negotiator, I felt at the time that this did not entirely suit my personality profile. Largo and Johns (2008) state than ensuring close matches between simulation and real-life personality traits are more likely to produce positive results. For me, perhaps the most challenging part of being assigned this role was working and communicating effectively with our team in a clear and assertive way. Occasionally, I felt uneasy negotiating with other team members who I felt had their own agenda and seemed unwilling at times to compromise. In hindsight, this was one of the biggest challenges I faced in this activity. However, it also allowed me to build my skills and confidence in these areas over the number of weeks we were involved in the simulation. The role that effective communication played within the simulation was of key importance and the chance to personally critically reflect upon this is also as important. Nixon (2014), Johnson and Wiggs (2011) and Peterson (2012) all state that effective communication within a team dynamic is essential. This is further supported by research (Wu Xiao 2011; Peterson 2012) that claims that team members need to employ open dialogue and have clear agendas. To comment upon my communicative style, it appeared that I tried to not compromise myself but be as Danks (2012, p. 24) states a clear and reasoned thinker and communicator. For the most part, our group exchanged information well and it could be argued that we mostly achieved goals through effective dialogue, clear understanding and working as a cohesive team. In summary then, it can be acknowledged that our team communicated effectively throughout this simulation and upon reflection, this clearly aided us in reaching our overall goals. Another benefit to reflection is the opportunity to rectify issues that can impede performance. To improve the self, shows courage, persistence and effective determination (DuPont 2013, p. 69). To therefore reflect upon some of the challenges that the simulation brought to our team, and how we could resolve them, it could be said that effective delegation and time management seemed to hamper us. At the time, our team noticed that it was often hard to delegate tasks to team members. This was often due to conflicting schedules, workloads and other commitments. For me, this was a significant handicap in our team and perhaps upon reflection we should have thought about how to delegate tasks in a more effective and clearer manner. Ellis (2012) argues that delegation can offer significant time savings when accomplishing group tasks, and this is something we should have considered more as we often did not take into account the particular strengths or weaknesses of the individuals in our tea m. In addition, it did appear that we experienced some challenges in our time management principles. In looking back, we had disputes with individuals arriving to scheduled meetings on time, undertaking simulation activities in a timely manner, as well as our team not allocating sufficient periods to successfully complete tasks. These were all significant challenges both to me personally, as well as to the remainder of the team. To reflect on this, perhaps demonstrates the need for commitment from each team contributor to be a key agent of change (Atkins Lowe 2011, p. 19). Having experienced these issues and to critically reflect upon them, it could be argued that our team should have been more realistic about the timing of activities, clearly determining who was responsible and effectively ensure that we could achieve the simulation goals in adequate time. This understanding has been a valuable lesson to me, and in the future, I will ensure that sufficient planning and ample time are adequately factored into group activities. In conclusion, to reflect upon the role I have undertaken during the group simulation project, it can be maintained that a great deal has been learnt, experienced and confronted. In commenting upon the team dynamics, as well as the academic literature that has supported the learning this semester, it can be argued that a new set of knowledge and understanding has been created. In addition, it has been particularly important to become a reflective practitioner and that in undertaking such observations helps to improve not only ones performance but also enhance discipline-specific knowledge.

Islam and Christianity :: Religion Religious Chirstian Islamic Essays

Islam and Christianity There are hundreds of religions in this world. Of them two are the most prominent. Islam and Christianity. It is averaged that there are 750 million people practicing Islam, and another 1 billion practicing Christianity. The start of Islam is actually derived form Christianity, history books indicates that one night in the year 610, the first of many revelations came to Muhammad from God by way of the angel Gabriel (In Christianity this is the same Angel which brings the news of Jesus' birth, Jesus of course is the founder of Christianity). The message Muhammad received told him that there was but one God (Identical to the inception of the Ten Commandments), not many gods, as most Arabs believed. This God was creator of the world (In Christianity, it's documented in Genesis Chapter 1 verse 1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth), and He would one day judge mankind (This is also true in Christianity: "The Lord will judge his people." Hebrews 10:30). Both of these re ligions share almost the same framework, but they also differ in many ways. The word Islam means "surrender" or "submission," submission to the will of Allah, the one God. Muslims are those who have submitted themselves. The basic creed of Islam is brief: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah. Islam teaches that there is one God, the creator and sustainer of the universe. This God, Allah, is compassionate and just. Because He is compassionate, He calls all people to believe in Him and worship Him. Because He is also just, on the Last Day He will judge every person according to his deeds. On the Last Day, all the dead will be resurrected and either rewarded with heaven or punished with hell. In Christianity one of the Ten Commandments states that "I am the Lord you God.....you shall have no other gods before me", also identical to Islam God is considered the creator of the universe, and he is also just. On the last day, or judgment day, the same holds true as in Islam in the Christian beliefs, the dead will be resurrected and either rewarded with heaven or punished with hell. Mankind is regarded as the crown of creation, entrusted by God with management of the whole created order. In Christianity this was Adam, who had dominion over all the animals and beasts of the earth.

Merchant of Venice Essay: Antonios Love for Bassanio -- Merchant Veni

Antonio's Love for Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   Antonio feels closer to Bassanio than any other character in The Merchant of Venice. Our first clue to this is in the first scene when, in conversation with Antonio, Solanio says, "Here comes Bassanio, your most noble kinsman, / Gratiano, and Lorenzo. Fare ye well: / We leave you now with better company" (i. i. 57-59). Once Antonio is alone with Bassanio, the conversation becomes more intimate, and Antonio offers an indebted Bassanio "My purse, my person, my extremest means" (137). We find out later that Bassanio needs money to woo Portia, a noble heiress who Bassanio intends to marry. And though Antonio is not in a position to loan money at the time, he does not disappoint Bassanio: Neither have I money, nor commodity To raise a present sum; therefore, go forth; Try what my credit can in Venice do: That shall be racket, even to the uttermost, To furnish thee to Belmont, to fair Portia. (124-128) Antonio does not make these offers to any other character in The Merchant of Venice. In fact, there is only one scene in which Antonio is present and Bassanio not; in act 3 scene 3, and even then Antonio ends the scene with a plea for Bassanio: "Pray God, Bassanio come / To see me pay his debt, -- and then I care not" (iii, iii, 35-36). Antonio expresses love for Bassanio to him several times throughout the play ("You know me well, and herein spend but time / To wind about my love with circumstance" [i, i, 154]; "Commend me to your honourable wife: / Tell her the process of Antonio's end; / Say how I loved you" [iv, i, 273-275]). But whether the love Antonio holds for Bassanio is either sexual or platonic is never overtly answered, which leaves speculation ... ...of Venice." Shakespeare Quarterly 37 1: 20-37. The Beginning of the N.F.L. Essay -- Art

The Beginning of the N.F.L. The year was 1920 and pro-football was in a state of confusion. The three main problems that led to all the confusion were, salaries rising, players jumping from team to team and the use of players still enrolled in college. So, on August 20, 1920, a group of men representing the four current pro teams met. When the day was done the American Professional Football Conference was born. The A.P.F.C. was formed to make one governing body over pro football. Then, on September 17, 1920, a second organizational meeting was held. At the second meeting the following teams attended: the Akron Pros; Canton Bulldogs; Cleveland Ohio Indians; Dayton Ohio Triangles; Decatur Illinois Staleys Athletic Club; Hammond Indiana Pros; Massillon Tigers; Muncie Indiana Flyers; Racine [a Chicago street] Cardinals; Rochester New York Jeffersons; Rock Island Illinois Independents; and [the State of] Wisconsin. One of the first orders of business was to change the name of the American Professional Football Conference to the American Professional Football Association. The second order was to appoint a president. So Native-American Olympic Gold Medallist Jim Thorpe was elected as league president. Other rules were made such as a membership fee of $100 per team; to be charged to give an appearance of respectability No team ever paid it. Scheduling was left up to the teams, and there were wide v ariations. This occurred both in the overall number of games played and in the n...

Lab 5 Acid/Base Extractions Essay

The purpose of this experiment is to separate either the organic base (amine) or organic acid (carboxylic acid) from a mixture that contains inorganic impurities (salt) by performing a liquid-liquid extraction and then taking a melting point. Key Experimental Details and Observations Our starting material, Compound B, was a fine white powder and weighed 0.535g. The final product was a shiny white sheet that resembled acrylic paint and weighed 0.109g. Results Our percent yield was 0.109g/0.535g x 100 = 20.4%. Discussion and Conclusions The melting point ranges we got for compound B ranged from 110.8-114.0 Â °C, while the melting point range for benzoic acid is 121.0-123.0Â °C and 103.0-107.0Â °C for 4-amino acetophenone. Since the ranges we acquired for compound B are directly in between both acid and base melting points, we can conclude that the purity for compound B is relatively high due to the compound being made up of equal parts of benzoic acid and 4-amino acetophenone. Thus saying that our melting point ranges are fairly accurate because they exemplify an equal percentage of both compounds, which is exactly what compound B is made up of. The purity can also be concluded through the melting points depression because depression arises from impurities within the lattice of a crystalized sample. We acquired a percent yield of 20.4%, which is relatively low. This result could be from part of the compound B solution being left behind in the Erlenmeyer flask when pouring the solution into the vacuum filtrate. The efficiency of a liquid-liquid extraction is high because it did allow us to gain some of our starting product back. We were able to isolate the acid from the base by deprotonating the solution with 10mL of NaOH. This caused the benzoic acid to settle at the bottom of the separatory flask because the NaOH broke it into ions, which made the acid polar. We then protonated the solution by adding HCl, which cause the acid to separate from the solution.

Apush Vietnam War Essay

It is lucid that the fights imp do work the involving posts. The Vietnam fight greatly changed the States forever. It was the acheest fightfare fought in the Statess history, lasting from 1955 to 1973. The Vietnam War tarnished the Statess self-image by becoming the for the first time time in history the fall in States failed to accomplish its stated state of struggle aims, to go on a separate, independent, non communist government. The struggle overly had great effects on the the Statesn hatful. It was the first warfare ever imbue on television. The public was able to capture what happened on the battlefield. One of the chief effects of the war was the division it caused among the people. the Statesns work never been as divided since the Civil war. This war would have lasting effects on the United States. The Vietnam War took yener than the States had expected and its short term failures and the long lasting permanent defeat caused America a great evil of military , loss of human resources and most deadly, the loss of American hope.During the four historic period it took Nixon to end the war, he expanded the conflict into Cambodia and Laos and launched a colossal bombing campaign although galore(postnominal) legislators criticized the war, the carnal knowledge never denied the funds to fight on the contrasted land. For instance, General Fred, the Chief of stave of the United States Army, wrote a Memorandum to the chairperson Ford, which stated, We went to Vietnam in the first place to support the S out(a)h Vietnamese people non to defeat the northwest Vietnamese. We reached out our debate to the sulfur Vietnamese people, and they took it. Even though America tried to help, Vietnam was the land of its people, so they knew their land way better than Americans. Additionally, a re feat to the U. S. Peace moves in Vietnam voiced, Indian reactions to the late March, 1968, U. S. peace efforts in Vietnam be mostwhat composite. About four out of ten literates agreed that the U. S. was sincerely essay to end the war, while nearly a third had reservations about the American intent. Americans started having mixed feelings about the war. Many wanted the war to end and some felt uniform it wasnt worth fight for.The sarcastic turning point came with the Tet Offensive, which began on January 30, 1968 when the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong attacked the key cities and every major(ip) American base in South Vietnam. The Tet Offensive underscored the credibility gap between the official statements and the wars real progress. On May 1, 1975, the North Vietnamese occupied Saigon and Americans evacuated with 150,000 of their South Vietnamese allies. afterward all the wars that came before this one and only(a), America have always had a stand as the world power, and with that, they believed they could win any war.Johnson go about a dilemma in Vietnam his predecessors had make a commitment to occlude the fabianism there and the American public withal seemed leave behinding to follow his leadership, alone some of his advisers cautioned him against the continued American involvement. Some critics of the war advised the administration to pursue a face-saving way out of Vietnam merely Johnson continued to dispatch more advisers, weapons, and economical aid. In 1964 president Johnson, believing that the American credibility was on the line, seized the opportunity to growth the pressure on North Vietnam. that with that in mind, at home, the people were doubt Johnsons decisions and many totally condemned it. For example, Ronald Ridenhour, a veteran who survived the My Lai Massacre reported to The cutting York Times, It would show the American people and their government that the policies of force abroad and deception at home were not only different to the principles of a democratic society but low, mean, stupid, brutal and self-destructive as well. He desired to have the government administra tion to more organize and to follow by means of with their words.Unlike Johnson, Nixon had a different come towards the war. Working with Henry Kissinger, his national shelter assistant and key foreign insurance advisor, Nixon exploited the deterioration of Soviet-Chinese relations which began in the early 1960s. After two years of secret negotiations, in February 1972, Nixon became the nations first president to set nucleotide on Chinese soil although the act was largely symbolic, cultural and scientific exchanges followed. As Nixon and Henry Kissinger hoped, the warning of U. S. -Chinese relations increase Soviet responsiveness to their strategy of detente. In Vietnam and elsewhere, Nixon and Kissinger continued to equate the Marxism with a flagellum to American interests and actively resisted the social revolutions that force lead to the Communism. Jane Fonda in a diffuse at Hanoi, stated, One thing that I have learned beyond a shadow of a doubt since Ive been in this count ry is that Nixon pass on never be able to break the facial expression of these people hell never be able to turn Vietnam, north and south, into a neo-colony of the United States by bombing, by invading, by attacking in any way. She believed that fighting wont settle bundle any problems related with the war ,instead it provide just be a pine of time.In the April of 1972, Congress was getting more concerned about abuses of Presidential power day by day the Senate voted to depose the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution but the planetary house did not go along. Consequently, Nixon pulled the U. S. soldiers out of Cambodia. When drafted into the war, American soldiers had no idea about how long the war would last, but some of them entered into the war with pride, because they had the notion of fighting on foreign land for their homeland.Little did they know that it will change their lives forever. By observing the photos of injure marines, it becomes evident that if they were badly injured , they could not offspring to the war and was sent home. After the war had ended, all the veterans were damaged physically or mentally. The veterans generally expressed two kinds of reactions to the defeat. For instance, Mr. Ron Ridenhour, who witnessed the positive situation of the My Lai Massacre expressed,I must take some positive action on this matter.I hope that you will launch an investigation immediately and keep me informed of your progress. He asked the government to bet the incident into the light. He believed that there should be a reasonable explanation for what happened in My Lai, a suspicious incident. Similar to Mr. Ron Ridenhour, many others regarded the commitment as an honorable one and felt betrayed by the U. S. government for not letting them and their now-dead comrades win the war others blessed the government for sacrificing the lives of the American youth in an immoral or useless war.Because the Vietnam War was in large part a civil, guerrilla war, comb at was remarkably brutal. The Veterans legalation (VA) estimated that nearly one-sixth of the three one thousand million veterans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Thus it can be said that the U. S. entered a war for which they had no idea about how to end it. This is valid to say that the technological United States failed in front of united human power. The Vietnam war has mpacted Americas point of deal and perspective of its people due to the war being a failure. Delusioned by the thoughts of having victory in every war, and then all of a sudden not being able to stop the spread of communism within a country abroad, and lastly, the voice of the American people which did support the war the Vietnam war has changed America by uplifting the absolute put of the American public on the American Government, American Military and the American leadership.
